2/24/11: Announcing the Winter 2011 Doc Cousounis Award Winners!!
The Doc Cousounis Award, named after Dr. Gerry T. "Doc" Cousounis, a soccer pioneer in the Roxborough/Manayunk section of Philadelphia, honors Starfinder participants who exemplify the ideals that Doc Cousounis promoted throughout his life. These young people demonstrate a commitment to personal and physical improvement through soccer and consistently display Starfinder's core values: respect, teamwork, persistence, pride, integrity, and caring.
Laith Hamed - Age 11
A program participant for over a year, Laith is an enthusiastic person who entered the program as a novice player and has shown great improvement in a very short time. He now plays in the Feltonville Soccer Club and has recruited six friends to join the program. When Laith suffered a broken arm, he still attended regularly and continued to exude positive energy, a love of learning, and a focused engagement in all activities.
Kevin Rangel - Age 9
Kevin has had almost perfect attendance over the past two years. A member of the Feltonville Soccer Club, he always arrives with a smile, excited for the session. Kevin is a leader among his peers who always tries to do the right thing and sets an example of commitment and good behavior. Kevin has embraced the Mosaic Mural Project, working continuously and with focus even after his peers have left for the night!
Cydney Pennick - Age 13
New to our program last winter, Cydney has attended almost all of her sessions and has also joined the Anderson Monarchs club. She is always respectful of her peers and coaches and cherishes the opportunity to play soccer. Cydney was extremely shy when she first started attending our program. Through her participation at Starfinder and with the Monarchs she has gained greater confidence around her peers and has learned to share her excitement for the sport.
Congratulations to Laith, Kevin, and Cydney! Each award winner will receive a certificate and a $25 gift card to www.soccer.com. Their names will be also added to the Doc Cousounis Award display on Starfinder's mezzanine.
